What is Melamine?
Melamine is low pressure laminate resin consisting of a white crystalline organic base.
Melamine is mainly used to produce melamine resin when combined with formaldehyde produces a very
durable thermoset plastic. Formaldehyde is a toxic carcinogen found
in particleboard furniture. This furniture releases the highest concentration of pollutants into the air inside the home in the form of
breathable dust and vapor particles. Exposure to formaldehyde occurs when dust and vapors are
breathed in. This plastic is often used in kitchen cabinets, glues,
countertops and is the main constituent of Formica®. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it is both a contaminant and
byproduct of several pesticides. Melamine is on the Hazardous Substance List cited by National Toxicology Program (NTP) and International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
